En 1777, dans la Nouvelle Angleterre, au cours d’une expédition punitive, des soldats du roi d’Angleterre pendent Timothy Dudgeon, accusé de soutenir les colons américains insurgés. Pour avoir enterré le pendu pendant la nuit dans le cimetière du village voisin, son fils, Richard Dudgeon et le pasteur de la paroisse se retrouvent entraînés dans une aventure rocambolesque.
Richard "Dick" Dudgeon (Kirk Douglas) is apostasy and outcast from his family in Colonial history of the United States Websterbridge, New Hampshire, who returns their hatred with scorn. After the death of his father by mistakenly being hanged by the British as a rebel in nearby Springtown, Dick rescues his body from the gallows, where it had been left as an example to others, and has it buried in the parish graveyard in Websterbridge. He then returns to his childhood home to hear the reading of his father's will, much to his family's dismay.
O revolucionário Dick Dudgeon (Kirk Douglas) é preso por engano, pelos ingleses, no lugar do reverendo de seu povoado durante a Guerra da Independência Americana. Incapaz de falar a verdade por conta de princípios morais, ele continua recebendo a pena no lugar do reverendo.
